Are your feet sore and achy? Are they painful? It is helpful to learn some measures to relieve foot pain and keep your feet healthy and feeling good at all stages of life. Most people take their feet for granted, until pain or problems such as blisters or calluses develop. It is important to be kind to your feet and take care of them before problem arises and to treat existing problems before they limit your ability to function.

Taking care of your feet and practicing good foot hygiene also enhances your quality to life and ability to function. It makes you more productive in all that you do. It helps prevent foot problems down the road. If you already have foot problems, good foot hygiene will help keep the problems in check, and may help some of them disappear altogether. Here are tips to care for your foot

  • Inspect your feet everyday: Look at your bare foott every day for cuts, blisters, red spots, and swelling. You can use a mirror to check the bottoms of your foot or ask a family member for help if you have trouble seeing. Also check for changes in temperature.
  • Wash your feet everyday: It is advisable to wash your feet in warm, not hot water after which you dry well and be sure to dry between the toes. Do not soak your foot
  • Keep the skin soft and smooth: you can rub a thin coat of skin lotion over the tops and bottoms of your feet, but not between your toes
  • Keep it Smooth: Use a pumice stone to smooth corns and calluses.
  • Trim your toenails: This can be done each week or when needed
  • Wear shoes and socks at all times: Do not walk barefoot and also keep in mind to wear comfortable shoes that fit well and protect your feet. Feel inside your shoes before putting them on each time to make sure the lining is smooth and there are no objects inside
  • Keeps the blood flowing to your feet: This is done by putting your feet up when sitting, wiggle your toes and move your ankles up and down for 5 minutes, 2 or 3 times a day. Do not cross your legs for long periods of time.
  • Take care of your diabetes: Work with your health care team to keep your blood glucose level within a normal range.
  • Check with your health care provider: have your care provider check your bare feet and find out whether you are likely to have serious problems. Call your provider right away if a cut, sore, blister, or bruise on your foot does not begin to heal after a day
