PREVENTIVE HEALTH

Visiting the hospital has been limited to only when sick. For most people, getting a routine preventive health care check-up is subjective, it’s based on how they feel. Unfortunately for some, their condition is worsened already; the disease process has taken a great toll on them. This is often the case for young people who are not as worried about their health as older people.  Preventive health sounds strange to them because they are either not aware or do not know the benefits and the necessity.

Preventive health is a type of health focused on maintaining wellness and good health so as to prevent future illnesses. Preventive health is basically about accessing care before falling sick.

Preventive health care services in a medical setting include but not limited to physical examination, screenings, laboratory tests, counseling and immunizations.

There are also preventive health practices which include a healthy lifestyle, regular exercise and nutritive diet.

The purpose of these visits is to detect, halt or avert possible diseases.

IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTIVE HEALTH
The importance of visiting the hospital regularly for routine checkup cannot be over emphasized. These visits help to prevent the occurrence of acute and chronic diseases which result to life long illness or death.

For example, you can only know that you are pre diabetic or diabetic by having a blood sugar test. Diabetes may not have any symptoms in the early stages. A simple blood test can detect this. Screening for diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer should be done on a routine basis. All adults should endeavor to visit their care providers at least once in a month even when they feel healthy.

Preventive health care is divided into two – primary prevention and secondary prevention

Primary prevention
Primary prevention involves preventing or halting chronic and acute diseases in their earliest stages through immunizations and a healthy lifestyle that includes:

  • Nutritive diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Avoidance/ reduction of alcohol intake, sugar and salt
  • Getting enough sleep

 Secondary prevention
Secondary prevention involves detecting and treating a disease while it is still asymptomatic or at its earliest stages, which is usually when the body is most receptive to treatment.

For early detection, it’s crucial to get regular check-ups, counseling and screening for various diseases.

Below are some of the tests that may be done:

  • Blood pressure
  • Diabetes test
  • Cancer screenings, including colonoscopies, mammograms and prostate screening for men.
  • Cholesterol test
  • Colorectal cancer screening (fecal occult blood test or colonoscopy)
  • HIV test

Benefits of preventive health care
Early detection of diseases

Getting regular checkups is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself to maintain a healthy lifestyle and wellbeing. The goal of preventive care is for you to enjoy your life which leads to a better overall quality of life.
