Junk food is defined as food that contributes lots of calories to the diet with little or no nutritional value. They may look enticing with their attractive colors irresistible to the young and old alike, their sweet taste tickling the taste buds and their wonderful array of varieties and flavors. However, they offer no health benefits and absolutely no value for your money. In fact, junks are responsible for many of the serious health challenges we face in our society.


  • Increased risks of heart diseases

Junk food has a high-fat content that clogs arteries and increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. In fact, a big contributor to the danger associated with junk food stems from a large amount of sodium and fat typically found in them.

  • Increased risk of tooth decay

Another problem associated with junk food is tooth decay. This is because the sugar in sodas and other sweet beverages allows bacteria to produce acid that ruins teeth enamel. The occurrence of tooth decay is more prominent in individuals that eat junk foods.

  • Weight gain

Junk foods are calorie-dense and have high-fat content. Continuous consumption leads to the accumulation of fats and calories in the body, causing unhealthy weight gain which leads to obesity. Obesity, in turn, increases one’s risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and many other chronic health conditions.

  • Inability to control appetite

Trans fats (which are hard to digest) are present in fried and processed foods, this can cause mixed signals to be sent to the brain, thereby, making it difficult to process what you have eaten. It also makes it difficult to really determine how hungry you are, leading to the probability of overeating.

  • Diabetes

Junk foods are filled with processed sugars in order to appeal to our taste buds. Continuous consumption of these processed sugars leads to an abnormally high insulin level because of the constant need for carbohydrate metabolism; this eventually prompts the cells to begin to ignore this important hormone (insulin), resulting in a condition known as insulin resistance which ultimately leads to type 2 diabetes.

In the real sense of it, healthy foods are cheaper than most junk foods that we love to eat; for instance, the price of pizza or cold stone ice cream compared to the price of pineapple or cucumber. Healthy foods also offer a wide range of health benefits, as they are loaded with the required nutrients for proper growth and development of our bodies. Finally, it is important to note that the more you consume junk foods, the less you consume healthy foods, thereby, depriving yourself of the essential nutrients needed for the normal functioning of your body
