Sounds can be a nuisance, quite annoying when they are undesired to the ears and affect the activity or behaviour of humans. Many may regard noise as a minor issue that doesn’t have an effect on their health, after all it’s just noise and won’t kill us…right? Well, that may be true but noise has physical and psychological consequences to health.

Noise is regarded as a major pollutant because this disrupts the normal hearing sense and the natural flow of hearing. Noise is universal in everyday life and can result to auditory and non-auditory health effects. Hearing loss induced by noise remains widespread in occupational settings, and this is progressively caused by social noise exposure. For example, through personal music player. A new evolution has programmed human beings to be aware of sounds as a possible source of danger.  The most obvious of these dangers is interrupted sleep, tiredness, impaired memory and creativity but the more serious outcome is such continuous noise that sets off the body’s acute stress response, raising your blood pressure and heart rate and further lead to cardiovascular diseases.

The World Health Organization analyzed various studies on the effect of environmental noise over a range of health problems. The results explained that exposure to prolonged or excessive noise has been discovered to cause health problems. It was found out that atleast one million healthy years of life are lost each year in Europe alone due to noise pollution. They concluded that “there is overwhelming evidence that exposure to environmental noise has adverse effects on the health of the population” and ranked traffic noise second among environmental threats to public health. Keep reading to know more about the effects of environmental noise pollution on human health.

Hearing Problems. One of the five senses of human being is Hearing. It is an essential sensory part of any person. The ear serves the purpose of receiving sound waves and transmitting further for interpretation but when it comes to a point when the sound waves are termed noise, it becomes undesirable and interferes with your hearing capacity.

Sleeping Difficulty. Noise can disturb your sleep based on its psychological effect. The problem may not be limited to initiating sleep but it can also distort an established peaceful sleep and this result to stress. When you are in a noisy area, there is almost no chance of having sleep and health wise, inability to have adequate sleep interrupts the normal functioning of the body, causing discomfort, fatigue and general body weakness.

Disturbs your mental health. The brain coordinates the body’s stimulus and your ear is definitely connected to the brain. Based on this, all the sound waves that hit the ear are transmitted to the brain for interpretation. Given this, there is reduced cognitive functioning when you are exposed to environmental noise. People who live in noise-polluted areas tend to have lower cognitive power compared to those who live in quieter environments.

Risk of cardiovascular disorders. Noise pollution disturbs the heart and it ends up beating faster. Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol are also released with loud noise. Therefore, you may be predisposed to developing high blood pressure in noisy environments and this further predisposes to other cardiovascular related diseases.

Emotional disturbance. Too much noise may disturb your peace and productivity leading to a feeling of anger or annoyance. People in this state may also develop headache if such undesired noise is continuous.

Disturbs Communication. It is definitely difficult to interpret the speech of another person in a noisy environment and this leads to poor comprehension and misunderstanding.
