It’s not uncommon when people complain about persistent itching once they hit the shower. The skin gets a little itchy after you dry off with your towel and get dressed. This symptom only lasts a few minutes but it can be so uncomfortable. For some, this sensation is severe and debilitating, and to others, it is mild.

There are many reasons for experiencing itchy skin after a shower, and some are quite common than the other. In the absence of specific skin condition such as eczema, shingles, hives, or psoriasis, your itchy skin might be as a result of

  • Dry Skin. This simply means that your skin is too dry also termed “Xerosis cutis”. Your dry skin may be as a result of soaking your skin in hot water for long periods of time and this act will strip your skin of its natural oil, resulting in irritation as the skin lacks moisture already. The itchy sensation from this cause mostly happens on your feet or lets because those parts of the body have so much contact with the water.
  • Sensitivity to soap. You can develop a dry skin with the type of soap you are using. A harsh soap may dry out your skin and leave a lasting itchy after shower. It is essential to wash entire soap residue off your skin after a shower.
  • Some itchy sensations starts after contact with water like when you swim wash your hands etc and this is termed aquagenic pruritus.


How to relieve itchiness after shower

  • Moisturize your skin immediately after shower. Using a moisturizer while your skin is still wet will help to lock moisture into your skin. A fragrance-free hypoallergenic moisturizer is good for you. If you are prone to develop acne, you should try an oil-free moisturizer.
  • Pat dry after shower. Instead of rubbing your skin with a towel to dry off moisture completely from your skin, you can just pat dry with your towel and immediately apply your moisturizer.
  • Change your soaps. Recurrent itching without a rash may indicate to you that it is time to switch soaps. Try and get a mild soap with hypo-allergenic ingredients. Most moisturizing soap has been found to have a positive effect on reducing the symptoms of dry skin.
  • Use of menthol or calamine lotion at the site of irritation or itching after shower
  • It might be helpful to change your bath routine. Using shorter times to shower with lukewarm water may help reduce the itchy sensation on your skin
  • Remain hydrated. You can have a dry scaly skin if you are dehydrated. Taking water about 1.5-3ltrs daily is recommended to keep your body hydrated and this makes your skin stay healthy as well.
  • Anti-itch creams are available over the counter. It is important to note that most itchy creams over the counter, like topical corticosteroids, don’t usually work to address itching caused by a dry skin.
  • Also avoid irritants to your skin. Possible irritants may include hot water, extreme changes in temperature, and specific skincare products you react to
