Do you know that a woman’s reproductive health is paramount to her wellbeing. This determines her fertility rate and the overall wellbeing of her child. Studies shows that Nigeria accounts for roughly 14% of the global burden of maternal mortality. Gynaecological conditions that affect the reproductive health and also lead to infertility or birth complications  among women of reproductive age(11-45) includes; ovarian cancers, endometriosis, fibroids, cervical and vagina cancers, polycystic ovarian syndrome. There are many signs and symptoms of reproductive disorders in women. It differs from case to case, depending on the exact nature of the disorder. This is why early detection is necessary to get treatment to prevent its occurrence. Here are signs you shouldn’t avoid.

Persistent and unusual pain in the pelvic and abdominal region: This usually lasts for more than six months and can vary between moderate to severe pains. This is often the first sign that shows that something is wrong. This pain can be experienced during periods or after sexual intercourse. it is seen as one of the frequent complains among women. it serves as a probable sign to gynaecological problems like polycystic ovarian syndrome, cervical cancer, fibroids, endometriosis and sexually transmitted infections. if this pain becomes consistent within months, you should go to the hospital.

Vaginal bleeding or spotting in between periods: This is another crucial sign of reproductive disorder which is a common complaint among women. It accompanies pelvic pain during periods and can serve as a major concern. Although there are certain factors that can also cause vaginal bleeding or spotting during period. they include; contraceptives sex, stress and hormonal change. Most women diagnosed with cervical cancer experience irregular bleeding. Bleedings could also be due to other medical conditions, such as  pelvic inflammatory disease or an infection in the pelvic organs. However, if you notice this repeatedly for three month or more without  any of the risk factors earlier mentioned, it could be a sign of a reproductive disorder. Hence the need to get yourself examined as soon as possible.

Periods occurring in unusual or irregular time intervals: This is a sign common with gynaecological disorders like cervical cancers, vaginal cancers, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis and ovarian cancers which can lead to infertility later in life. Ignoring such sign can be costly especially when it is time to achieve conception.

Heavy periods: This is another sign of menstrual disorder in the reproductive system which affects menstrual blood flow especially among women with fibroids and pelvic inflammatory diseases. it reveals the state of the reproductive structures, hence if immediate care isn’t rendered  can lead to infertility problems and other complications like anaemia. if you are experiencing this frequently, you should see a doctor who would carry out pelvic examinations and ultrasound investigations to confirm diagnosis and begin necessary treatment.

 Excessively painful cramping during periods: Most of the times this cramps is not alleviated by the intake of painkillers or any other pain relieving therapy, if you don’t get any relief, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Pain during sexual intercourse: This is another warning sign of reproductive disorder especially common among women with cervical cancer and pelvic inflammatory diseases. although other medical conditions can give this sign but it is crucial to know when you need to seek your doctor for advice especially when gynaecological conditions are concerned.

Sudden fluctuations in body weight and changes in general physical appearance: This is noticed as the last signs of cancers, pelvic inflammatory problems, fibroid and infections. This is due to loss of appetite and increased blood loss which is commonly experienced during this state leading to weight loss, dehydration and emaciation

Irregularities in sleeping habits: There are other medical conditions that can cause sleeplessness or disturbed sleep pattern. however, heavy bleeding during period and frequent menstrual cramps can cause great discomfort and restlessness hence causing sleep irregularities in women with reproductive problems
