The World Health Organization in this current “World breastfeeding week, 2019” has ascertained that breastfeeding is the normal and best way of providing infants with the necessary nutrients required for healthy growth and development. Baby-led breastfeeding attachment technique

One way to learn about breastfeeding is letting your baby teach you and this is termed “baby-led attachment”. Here, baby follows his/her drive to search for your breast and attach to start sucking. This technique can help you prevent cracked or sore nipples which can arise from poor attachment to the breast. Follow the following steps for this technique:

  • Ensure you feel comfortable and well supported with pillows. Rest & lean back rather than sit upright.
  • Position your baby between your breasts, facing you. If your baby is crying, try to calm her down
  • A calm baby will follow her drive and start to move towards the breast. Give support to the shoulders and beneath the bottom. You can also hold the head. (Your baby knows where to go and will find his way, all you should do is keep the baby calm.
  • When the mouth is just below the nipple, the baby will dig the chin into your breast, open the mouth to attach to the breast and starts to suckle.

Mother-led breastfeeding attachment technique

This technique also aid good attachment to the breastfeeding.

  • Ensure you feel comfortable and well supported with pillows. For women with small breasts, you need to raise the baby higher supported with pillow to be comfortable.
  • Give support to the baby behind her back and shoulders (not the head), for your baby’s chest to touch your chest as well. Also, bring the nose in line with your nipple.
  • Carefully sweep the nipple from your baby’s nose to the lips to encourage a wide opened mouth.
  • When the mouth is wide open, bring the baby to your breast pointing the nipple at the roof of his mouth. The mouth will close over the breast and sucking starts.

A good attachment doesn’t hurt though you may feel a ‘stretching sensation’ while your baby sucks. If you checked that your baby has not attached correctly to the breast, stop and take off the breast to start again.
