Most parents often wonder how best to feed their little children, especially when they are picky eaters. More than half of the parents will agree that there is actually nothing more frustrating than having your children refuse what you painstakingly prepared. Apart from the stress of cooking, refusal to eat may lead to food wastage when nobody wants to eat the leftovers- and we all know how much it costs to buy food items these days!

Below are some tips for meal planning for your children:

  • LET THE WHOLE FAMILY HELP PLAN THE MENU.

First of all, it boosts a child’s confidence knowing that his/her opinion counts in the family. It will be difficult for a child to refuse what he/she had helped in choosing. Making all the meals decisions for them is like trying to impose something they don’t want, they may even believe that the parents are wicked by trying to make them eat something they don’t want to. Make it a point to always ask for suggestions when you’re making your grocery list and meal plan. You can even take them along to the market or grocery store, it’s fun for the children.

  • ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN TO RENDER SOME HELP

Although, we may think the children will get in the way if allowed to help in the kitchen, but it is good to allow them to help once in a while. Not because of the help they can render (which is not much), but to give them the satisfaction of helping mummy in the kitchen and getting praised for it. It is also difficult for the child to refuse what he/she helped to prepare.

  • SERVE MEALS IN A CREATIVE WAY

Children, as we know, love colorful things. Some children even love to use the plates or bowls with colorful patterns. Serving meals in a colorful and creative manner helps to get them to eat more.

  • DON’T USE FORCE

Of course, nobody likes everything. Even as adults, there are probably foods that we don’t eat for no other reason than we just don’t like them. It might be texture, flavour, taste, or something else. It is absolutely normal for children to have one or two foods they don’t like to eat, the problem is when the number of disliked foods exceeds four. Then you may have to find another way to incorporate the food into the child’s diet, so far there is no case of intolerance. Also, some children throw up after being forced to eat a particular food. The food still gets wasted and you may have a big mess to clean up afterwards.
