Piles are also known as hemorrhoids and they occur as a result of swelling located inside or around the anus with enlarged blood vessels in it. It can be truly painful accompanied with discomfort. Piles are usually not dangerous or life threatening but they should be well cared for as they occur to prevent re-occurrence.

There are two types based on their location. The internal hemorrhoids are found inside the rectum. You cannot see or feel them and they do not cause pain since sensory nerves are absent. External hemorrhoids on the other hand are located under the skin around the anus. They are very painful; the swelling is visible and itchy especially when defecating.  Some people can have both i.e. a combination of both external and internal hemorrhoids (piles).

It appears piles occur more frequently between ages 45 and 65 although one can have piles at any age. Strain when passing stool, low fiber diet, pregnancy, lifting heavy loads, staying seated for long periods of time puts you more at risk of developing piles. Symptoms such as itching, discomfort, light bleeding, pain or burning sensation and swelling are highly suggestive of piles. You can relieve these symptoms through the following measures;

  • Avoid seating for long periods of time. You can take short walks, move around your office table and stretch your lower extremities at regular intervals.
  • Ensure you do not strain during bowel movement and do not stay seated on the toilet seat for a long time.
  • It is essential to relieve constipation and prevent it. Increase your fluid intake and fiber as well. You can get this by consuming fruits and vegetables. Most times, these dietary changes are enough if the hemorrhoid is mild. A fiber supplement and stool softener can also be used.
  • Application of cold compress can reduce the swelling if hemorrhoid is external and can be seen and felt. The cold compress works by reducing inflammation.
  • A sitz bath in lukewarm water can also be helpful. This can be done for about 10 to 15 minutes frequently in a day to relieve pain sensations associated with piles.
  • Stay away from activities that require you to lift heavy loads and ensure you stay physically active.
  • Work towards reducing your weight if you are obese.
  • You can use anti-inflammatory medications to relieve itchiness and reduce swelling.
  • Good hygiene with wet wipes can be used to clean after defecating to avoid infections.
