Do you know those unpleasant white flakes on the collar of your shirt or blouse are dandruff? This can be embarrassing and itchy most times. Dandruff really is not about your hair, or how often you wash it. Instead, it’s about the skin on your scalp. Skin cells that grow and die off too fast are the problem.

Dandruff is a sign that the skin of the scalp is peeling off (exfoliating). Dandruff may get worse when you are stressed or sick. Cold, dry winters can trigger dandruff or make it worse, too.

Dandruff often starts with puberty as your hormones start to change, causing you to produce more scalp oils for the dandruff-causing microbeMalassezia globosa to thrive on.

But it can also appear at other times when your hormones change such as in old age or during times of stress.

Dandruff is occur when 3 things come together: A microbe that’s present on everyone’s scalp called Malassezia globosa, natural oils on the scalp known as sebum and s sensitive scalp

The easiest way to spot dandruff is flakes appearing on your shoulders, but there are other signs too this includes: Itching, Redness and Dry scalp

Treatments for dandruff

Two factors should be considered when you treat dandruff:

  • Age
  • Severity of the dandruff

The main treatment for dandruff is anti-dandruff shampoo

Shampoos and products for the scalp are available OTC at most stores and pharmacies. It is important to remember that seborrheic dermatitis can be controlled, but not cured with these products.

Before using an anti-fungal shampoo, individuals should carefully try to remove any scaly or crusty patches on the scalp. If they can be removed, the shampoo will be more effective.
