It is not unusual to occasionally forget where you put your keys or glasses, not to remember the name of the personal trainer you liked at the gym, to forget where you parked your car, or the name of an acquaintance. As you age, it may take you longer to remember things. Not all older adults have memory changes, but can be a normal part of aging.

Memory loss is nothing to take lightly; here are five (5) things you need to know about memory loss:

  • Head injury:A severe hit to the head from a fall or automobile accident, for example can injure the brain and cause both short and long-term memory loss.
  • Sleep deprivation:Both quantity and quality of sleep are important to memory. Getting too little sleep or waking frequently in the night can lead to fatigue, which interferes with the ability to consolidate and retrieve information.
  • Medications:A number of prescription and over-the-counter medications can interfere with or cause loss of memory. Possible culprits include: antidepressants, antihistamines, anti-anxiety medications, muscle relaxants, tranquilizers, sleeping pills, and pain medications given after surgery.
  • Alcohol, tobacco, or drug use. Excessive alcohol use has long been recognized as a cause of memory loss.
  • Memory loss develops quickly, over a few hours or days. This is called delirium. It can be a sign of many serious problems, such as an infection, or a worsening of a long-term illness likeheart disease or diabetes.

Here are tips to improve your memory:

Stay mentally active, sleep well, Keep a diary at home as well as at work to remind you to do daily tasks and Repeat important information you need to remember back to someone.
